Approved. The fella and I came here on our Up North trip recently and Sydney's was a favorite stop of mine. It's right on Lake Superior, so it feels like a coastal beach shack. We ended up sitting on the beach on some patio chairs, but there's a rooftop too! They serve frozen custard and brick-oven pizza at a fraction of the prices you'll see at nearby restaurants. I actually sort of regret not eating pizza here instead of Sven & Ole's, because the ingredients sounded a million times more tasty and fresh. They also serve some Mediterranean stuff like salads and gyros. We were here for a cold one though... a cold cup of custard. As we looked at the menu, at first my heart was sinking because I thought the only options were chocolate and vanilla. Then I saw that they do their own blizzards!!! WHAT. I ordered the Mocha Heath blended frozen custard and never looked at a DQ again.** **Probably not true.

We enjoyed awesome custard after eating horrible Scandinavian pizza at another joint. The custard was awesome. We all wish we had tried the wood fired pizza at Sydney's. Also, the rooftop seating has a spectacular view of Lake Superior looking north.

I liked what this place had to offer. I just didn't like how they charge an extra 50¢ to use a card when they charge 6$ for a sundae. Looked like it had a lot of other tasty things though. I will say that if you go during the summer, you can go right behind the bar/ restaurant and go on the roof or straight to the pebble beach behind the restaurant. That made it all really nice. Just to be able to relax. So good location! Even though it's down at the end of a less traveled street.

Can only echo the other positive reviews already posted by others. Watching the sunset from the rooftop deck while sipping a glass of wine or eating a delicious frozen custard dessert is a must-do. Didn't have the pizza but saw plenty of people ordering and enjoying. Tip: $10 minimum for credit card use or there is a service charge.

Visiting from CA I searched yelp for places to eat down at the north shore I thought Sydney's looked like a good place to try boy was I wrong, it is a FANTASTIC place to try It is so SO delicious and friendly staff.. I've had 'frozen custard' plenty of times and its usually soft serve and ice cream like. Nope not here. It's scooped and the most dreamy, creamy custard. I had a double scoop vanilla with the mixed berry sauce. Excellent. I also had the Greek chicken gyro also excellent. My mom and aunt shared a salad which was good. Mom had a single scoop of vanilla custard with the hot fudge - but it didn't have very much hot fudge sauce, not excellent but tasty I hear this place gets ridiculously busy during the summer, no surprise. I wish it was closer to home I'd go here every week and gain 75lbs Very, very good - just....maybe be a little bit more generous with the hot fudge sauce :)

After visiting Sydney's, I've officially decided I prefer frozen custard to plain old ice cream. The creamy texture can't be beat and there's something sinful about how the flavor washes over your taste buds. Mmmm... And as if the product wasn't worth raving over in and of itself, the setting for Sydney's absolutely takes the cake. Orders are taken at a walk-up window so there is outdoor seating only, but you can choose between tables and benches out back that overlook the lake and rooftop seating that show a panoramic view of Lake Superior, Artists' Point, the marina and the wooded hills that lead into the BWCA. After wandering up and down Artists' Point for awhile (an interesting feat for a pregnant woman, I might add), my husband and I stopped at Sydney's and split a double scoop of frozen custard. Then we found a comfy spot and watched the sky turn pink as the sun set over the hills. I couldn't recommend it enough; it was a perfect end to the day. My husband also noticed that Sydney's had a Chicago dog on their menu. The next time we visit Grand Marais, I have a feeling we'll be returning to Sydney's so he can try it out--he's a sucker for Chicago dogs and quick to judge their authenticity. Cash and checks only, so make sure you hit up the ATM before you visit.

I'm not sure I had ever had frozen custard before, little did I know what I was missing. We tried this place based on a recommendation from a friend. I'm not sure we would have seen it or ventured past it had we not been told about it. The frozen custard was out of the world good. Even better is enjoying it on the roof with an excellent view! I wanted to run over to the people at the DQ and ask them what the F*@&$ they were thinking for not eating at Sydney's!

So very, very good and great service. On a busy day the staff made a special batch of custard to make certain there was no trace of peanuts for our son. The roof top deck is great even if it is breezy and cool because of the glass walls. A must visit!

They just started taking credit cards and there is possibility that they will be serving beer and wine by the end of the summer. :) This is a great place to go for pizza (I highly recommend the Gorgonzola/apple slices/honeyed pecans), custard (the chocolate and vanilla are delish by themselves but I really dig having all the berries they have on had mixed into a sydnami-like a blizzard...but a sundae is good too!), and gyros (I eat this at least once a week). Great views, really nice staff, and fun outdoor food! You can also get a pizza to go if you like that sorta thing.

A party of 7 we were here visiting from California. After reading the reviews on yelp we decided to stop by. We loved it the ice cream was wonderful the view from the roof was awesome. The service was friendly and very helpful and patient in helping us decide what we wanted. We definitely will come by if we ever find ourselves in this area again.

Can't beat the custard! Sitting on the roof was way cool. Pizza smelled great so we will have to return again.

Sydney's has added an outdoor pizza oven to their location! That means that not only do they serve the creamiest, tastiest custard in Grand Marais, but now they can serve fire-baked pizzas! I love the rooftop patio that overlooks Lake Superior. It is the perfect location for enjoying a scoop of ice cream. I thought their pizzas were tasty. We had the margherita pizza. It definitely has a lot of garlic! The flavor was a bit off for me and I prefer a little sauce. This pizza only had cheese, olive oil and slices of tomatoes. I think they still might have a few kinks to work out with their pizzas (it took about 25 minutes for ours to be ready). But if you are looking for a great ice cream shop, this is your place!

We were told that they had great custard and it's the absolute truth. Best frozen custard I remember having. Thick, rich, and creamy.

Reasons Why You NEED To Go To Sydney's Frozen Custard 1: Nothing can beat Sydney's beautiful rooftop view of Lake Superior/ Grand Marais in the summer! Plus Sydney's is a great place to grab a treat and skip rocks in the lake. 2: The custard! Even if you aren't a huge custard fan, Sydney's will make a believer out of you! 3: The wood-fried pizza is to-die-for! Sydney's has the second best pizza in town, compared to Sven & Ole's (which is hard to top). This is based on my personal preference of thick crust vs. a thinner crust. This is coming from someone who thinks Sven & Ole's has one of the best pizzas in Minnesota. The Gyro's are pretty darn good as well. 4: Friendly, efficient and knowledgeable staff. 5: The Peanut Butter Shake is quite possibly one of the best shakes I have ever consumed! Their mixed berry Sunday is 100% fresh and your taste buds can instantly taste the freshness. 6: Dog Friendly 7: Delicious vegetarian options available Just go! You won't regret it! Note: Accepts Visa & Mastercard

This is a truly special place right on the beach. They are now serving breakfast as well as fine pizza and dinners and desserts. You can also get beer and wine. They support local live music. The food is prepared with skill and has great flavor. Bruce and his staff are very outgoing and friendly. Sydneys is very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Easily the best place in Grand Marais for dessert but in the last year it's also become one of the best places to eat in general. Their gyro's are great but what has really made them a go to spot is the wood-fired pizza. In a town where pizza is supposed to be some silly overpriced Scandinavian tourist trap, Sydney's has taken over with their pizza that is (dare I say) VERY similar to the beloved Minneapolis chain Punch Pizza. Seating for now is outdoors (choose from fireplace or rooftop) or take out but they are in the process of adding indoor service and alcohol sales. I would never discourage a place from getting it's liquor license my only fear is that Sydney's gets too big and starts losing what's so fantastic about it right now. I highly recommend a chai shake and a Neapolitan pizza.

Custard was heavenly! Beautiful place to sit and enjoy your Neapolitan pizza or ice cream. They also have Chicago style hotdogs and gyros. The pizza is similar to Punch, but make no mistake, it's not nearly as good. Its good, but lacks that smoky goodness that Punch has and not nearly as good of ingredients. Came in the evening and enjoyed a nice fire in the fire pit in front while eating our pizza and then went around back on the beach to watch the Blue Moon that was out. Stunning. We would recommend their pizza, triple berry sundae and any custard. Chai Latte not the best I've had, so I'd go with coffee. We will be back. We loved it!

Service was really slow and a bit awkward (you order pizza in one spot, alcohol in another, salads were served w/o plates) but the pizza was fresh, hot and tasty! Sit upstairs on the deck and enjoy the amazing view! Ice cream sundae was good, too :)

Very tasty, very fresh. Had the raspberry with heath bar and thought it was amazing. We have went back twice now.

Tasty...Their chocolate custard even has little bits of chocolate in it..makes it better than regular, boring, custard. Location is perfect.
